Winter is the time of year that we spend a lot of time at home. We’re all watching a lot of TV as we huddle inside on our couches and in bed, away from the winter rains and snow, as we wait for Christmas and finally, in a few months, spring time. But there’s a while to go before that gets here – and in the meantime, here are some tips on how to improve the room that you’re spending most of your time in: the living room.
Get Rid Of The Magnolia
A lot of us like neutral colours on the walls in family spaces like the living room, but let’s face it: magnolia is absolutely out of fashion, to the point of looking a little tacky and old-fashioned. If you want a colour that’s going to last the test of time, go for off white or pale grey. Cool colours are much more now and in fashion.
Go For A New Couch
If your couch is starting to look a little battered and old, or if – horrors! – it isn’t as comfortable as it used to be and it’s starting to make awkward creaking noises whenever you stand up or sit down, it’s time to go for a new one. Make sure you go for a classic or timeless design like a modern leather sofa – you want something that will look good forever and that will still look good when it’s a little more worn in.
Invest In Patterned Pillows
If you like to have pillows on your couch (and who doesn’t?) then one way you can change the colour scheme of the room easily is by swapping between cushion covers. It’s also a great idea to have maybe one pillow on each couch that’s a more interesting design than the others – maybe a tapestry one or one with a quirky pattern like cats or buses.
Add An Accent Wall
Pick a current colour like ice blue or pale green, and add an accent wall to brighten up your room. As it’s just one wall, it’ll be easy to change in the future if you want to give the room a different feel. Remember that cooler colours are more modern and chic.
Go For New Lighting
Bright white lighting in your living room would not be conducive to a relaxing night on the couch. Instead, go for lower watt bulbs and lampshades that will help cast a golden glow across the room. Make sure that you go for shades with clean edges and snappy designs to go with the modern vibe of the room, and don’t let the colours match your pillows and accent wall too carefully – it’ll look like you’ve tried way too hard!
Remember Less Is More
When in doubt, remove an ornament – it’s pretty much always the case that less is more. Make space for the things that really matter to you, like family photographs and vases of fresh flowers. As for other ornaments, box them up and see if you miss having them around. If not, you were clearly well rid of them.
